Studied mine engineering at Technical University in Delft. Served as conscript in the army as artillery officer. Later joined the navy in which he served 34 years. Flew helicopters and specialized in naval air operations, commanded a squadron, a frigate and a naval air station (airfield). Left the navy in 2008.
